Moving Checklist

The following list is a checklist of what you need to do when you move to ensure there are no difficulties. Remember, you don't have to move everything into your new home.  Use this opportunity to clean and organize.  Any items you no longer require or want can be given to charity, or have a garage sale!

Four To Six Weeks Prior To Moving

1. Arrange movers
2. Verify with moving company that your possessions are insured
3. Arrange trucks and friends to help you move
4. List items to insure

Two To Three Weeks Prior To Moving

Notify the following of your move:

• Doctor
• Lawyer
• Accountant
• Veterinarian
• Financial institution - ask if they will transfer your accounts to the location nearest your new home
• Vehicle registration and licensing agency
• Revenue Canada
• Publication/Periodical subscriptions
• School
• Phone and cell phone providers
• Hydro
• Water
• Gas
• Cable
• Internet provider
• New Internet provider (if applicable)
• Alarm service
• Lawn/garden services
• Insurance companies
• Dentist
• Broker
• Finance companies
• Credit cards
• CAA
• Memberships
• Post Office

Now would be a good time to start arranging a garage sale for any unwanted items.

One Week Prior To Moving

1. Defrost fridge and freezer
2. Transfer bank accounts (if applicable)
3. Drain fuel and oil from power equipment
4. Drain hoses
5. Pack and label items that are being moved by you and your friends
6. Collect and pack valuables
7. Send all items out to be cleaned
8. Ensure all rented items have been returned

Moving Day

• Pack your box of basics (see below)
• Pack suitcases for trip
• Conduct last minute walk through, checking that all closets and the garage & attic are empty, doors and windows are closed and lock, and all lights are off.

Do's & Don'ts

Do

• Label everything clearly & make an inventory list - check off list when loading and unloading
• Back up your PC
• Consider bolting motors on appliances
• Time any repairs or purchases to coordinate with the move

Don't

• Pack flammables - dispose of at proper outlets
• Pack without labeling or organizing

Upon Arrival At Your New Home

1. Check your new home for existing damage before movers enter
2. Check off boxes from inventory list as they are unloaded
3. Have movers put items in appropriate rooms when unloading
4. Ensure your appliances are not damaged and working
5. Place your box of basics (see below) in an area that will remain easily accessible

Box of Basics

• 2-4 Black markers
• Scissors/Utility Knife
• Rolls of masking tape
• Light bulbs
• Flashlight
• Toilet paper
• Tissue
• Paper towels
• Toothbrush/toothpaste
• Shampoo
• Hand and body soap
• Bath towel(s)
• Baggies
• Scrub brushes, sponges, etc.
• Brooms, mops, dustpan
• Pail(s)
• Trash bags
• Rubber gloves
• Cleaning products e.g. floor cleaner, toilet cleaners, dusting products, etc.
• Cleaning rags
• Laundry detergent
• Dish soap
• Dishcloth/towel
